Hi Folks! I'm thrilled to be celebrating yet another birthday with Winnie & Walter today! Shay runs one of my most adored stamp companies around. As part of the festivities I have a challenge for you:
Make a project using a stencil.
Simple enough, right? One of my recent favorite ways of using a stencil is to provide a background for your focal point. Usually this involves stamping your image, covering it with a mask, and then stenciling around it. An example of this is one I shared on my blog from the recent release:
For this card I extended the stenciling all the way to the edges of the panel, however, recently I'm liking where you just stencil ink in the center portion of the panel around your focal point.
Here's another card from my blog where I used two stenciling techniques: 1) stencil from the edges of the card up to and around your focal point, and 2) layer a second stencil (the stars) on top of the first stencil (the triangles).
Finally, here's a new card I made for this post with yet another technique, stamping through a stencil. This card uses "Congrats" and "awesome" from The Big, the Bold and You. The stencil is Scenery: Classic Diagonal Creative Screenings. Some of the diagonals I sponged the same color ink on, and some I just left with the "awesome" word stamped repeatedly to fill the space. I like how "awesome" is a design element, and it is also a more hidden part of the sentiment.
These are just a few examples of using stencils for a jumping off point; there are so many other ways people have used stencils in card making. I enjoy using them because they are so versatile and very affordable. You can also just make your own out of thin packaging and die cuts you already own. Free!
I sure hope you're inspired and will give this challenge a try! I can't wait to see what amazing things you all come up with!
Thanks for looking,
-Kelly

I don't use stencils as much as I should, considering the number of stencils I have gathered in the past few years. Thanks for highlighting a few of the ways we can stretch our stencils. Love all three cards!
