January Leading Lady Virginia Lu | Take Two

Our January Leading Lady, Virginia Lu is back for her sensational second performance!  If you missed her smashing debut you must see it...CLICK HERE.  Virginia continues with her awe-inspiring art journaling sharing techniques that can be used in so many different ways and projects!

Ladies and gentlemen, Virginia....

Hello Winnie & Walter friends! I am so happy to be here again...well, I am also feeling relieved because I wasn’t sure how you like art journaling! However, your positive feedback give me such a boost and I am happy to share some more.  Let’s proceed to the Art Journal pages. You can see my progress through the following photos.

I am not an expert on art journaling. However, after playing and experimenting with it, my findings might be helpful to you if you are just starting out.

~theme: this will help you decide on your choice of stamps, stencils and dies.

~layout: think about the focus of your page and where you like to leave a space for art journaling.

~balance: it’s easy to add tons of details in one page. Remember to leave some “breathing room” for your design.

~colors: make your color choice with your ink pads, markers, and watercolors. That way, your page will come together easily.

~background first: start with the background that you want to create. Laying a good foundation is the key to a great page.

~embellishments last: after all the stamping and stencilling on the page, adding embellishments can be a lot of fun!

1. Apply Gesso for the base layer. Add old dictionary paper. Glue and cover it some more with Gesso. Let dry.

2. Stamp leaves with In Bloom: Renee's Blooms with assorted colored inks

3. Apply green ink with Scenery: The Leaf Effect Creative Screenings. I finger-paint mine with Studio Calico’s Audrey Mister Huey. Let dry.

4. Spray Color Shine (Heidi Swapp Creamsicle) on a piece of watercolor paper

5. Emboss sentiment in gold with The Big, the Bold and the Happy and maple leaf from Renee’s Blooms

6. Die Cut vellum with Goldie Trim Cutaways and add layers

7. Add tiny ink splatters with the help of a paint brush. Adhere maple leaf and sequins to the page.

The following page was also done in similar steps.

For this page, I applied Gelatos for the base. Because the colors were much brighter than I would have liked, I toned it down with another coat of Gesso. The white embossing was done with Mini Scenery:  Do You See What I See?, Madison and Multifaceted. I created the vellum embellishment with True Multifaceted Star Cutaways and alcohol inks.

I stamped the word “peace” from Merry and Bright with Evelin T Designs. The silver DMC thread and sequins were added for the final touch.

Lastly, I created with Mini Scenery. This one was made with Madison. With the Canson card stock, I white embossed and colored the left one with Distress Inks. The right one was created with Spectrum Aqua Markers.

As for the sentiment and the bows, DCWV glitter paper was die cut with In a Word: Thanks Cutaways and Take a Bow Cutaways.

Winnie's in Charge!

Rerun No. 8 | Scenery: The Party Hangover

Welcome lovelies to our next monthly Rerun!

Each Rerun will provide plenty of inspiration focusing upon a featured product, a month-long sale on the featured product and a challenge (with a prize!).

For our eighth Rerun we are concentrating on Scenery: The Party Hangover. Scenery: The Party Hangover is a delightful set that includes fun borders and background builders that can be used alone or it's perfect for using with other stamp sets like The Party and My Precious!  Let your imagination run wild and party.

Now on to the cards!

I created a happy quick card using Scenery: The Party Hangover and My Precious.

I love the possibility of adding images to the borders from Scenery: The Party Hangover.  This time around I stamped the big scallop twice in hickory smoke Tim Holtz Distress Ink.  A tip for stamping with Distress Ink is to cover the stamp first with Versamark first.  To the scallops I added some lovely jewels from My Precious using mermaid lagoon and abandoned coral Distress Inks.  I then used a water brush and the same ink colors to paint in the stones.  Around the stones I also added a shadow using hickory smoker and the water brush.  Next, I stamped the solid small and large stars onto the scallops.

For the sentiment I stamped the words from My Precious in Versamark and heat embossed it in silver.

I then cut out the panel using the largest rectangle layer from Essentials: Katharine Cutaways making sure I kept the outer rectangle that was left outside the die cut rectangle.  I attached the outer rectangle to an A2 card base and attached the rectangle inside the outer rectangle and card base with foam dimensional adhesive.

January Leading Lady Virginia Lu | Take One

Today we are excited to introduce our January Leading Lady, Virginia Lu.   Virginia is an extraordinary crafter and such a shining light in the papercrafting community.  I remember encountering her online through Flickr several years ago and she was so welcoming and encouraging.  We are so excited to see how brightly Virginia will shine throughout this month!

Hello, Winnie & Walter friends! I am SUPER excited to be your Leading Lady for the month of January. What an honor to help kick off 2016 with a great start here! First of all, just a little bit about me-Virginia Lu (Yes, Virginia...). I am an avid stamper and have discovered stamping 20 years ago. I became active in the online stamping community in 2009 and I have been enjoying every minute of it. I am lucky to have been published a few times and have won some challenges and competitions in the last few years. My card-making blog has become my addiction and I am passionate about stamping.

For the January Leading Lady feature, I would like to try something NEW! I love card-making and scrapbooking. However, I am always intrigued by art journals. With the versatile designs from Winnie & Walter, this provides me with the perfect chance to dive in! Why art journals, you ask?

These are a few things I think might make you consider giving art journaling a try!

~Make it YOUR own: There is no rule as to how you want to keep your art journal. After all, it’s YOURS! You can use store-bought art journals or simply make your own pages with heavy card stock.

~Try new techniques/supplies/sketches: you can experiment with new things in your art journal. Jot down your ideas and run with it! NO judgement.

~It’s therapeutic: working at your own pace is also what makes it fun and relaxing. You can spend as little or as much time as you want in one sitting. Your page is as elaborate/simple as you want it to be.

~Use your old and new supplies: the blank pages are your canvas and playground. You can try any supplies that you have or try using new stuff!

~Get inspirational: your art journal serves as a great source of inspiration. Perhaps this will help you come up with something new and amazing!

~It’s FUN!

Here is my creative process:

I got a good deal on the Faber Castell Art Journal and it is a perfect one for beginners like me. This album allows me to take out the pages one at a time.  The only supply that you might consider getting is Gesso. It is like a paint primer for paper. Gesso mixes well with Gelatos, Watercolors and Distress Inks/Markers. As you can see,  you can emboss, apply stencils and stencil paste, glue paper...in an art journal. Let’s see what I came up with!

The cover of my art journal:

1. Use Gesso to prepare the surface.  I applied a layer of Gesso with a paint brush. I then used my fingers to make sure the Gesso is evenly applied.

2. After the Gesso was dried, I started to add details. In this case, I stamped some text background with the set Happiest of Holidays with Evelin T Designs.

3. I used Canson watercolor paper and made a die cut with Cover Model: The Leaf Effect Cutaway. By using various Distress Inks with water, the cover was quick and easy to create.

4. A bird house was stamped (from Happiest of Holidays with Evelin T Designs ) and a scalloped die piece ( Goldie Trim Cutaways) were added to complete the design.

This first page may appear to be flat, but it has some interesting depth and dimensions.

1. Create a colorful background/frame with Scenery: Madison Creative Screenings with various Distress Inks and Ink Applicator.

2. Stamp the images with Our Town. I used MISTI for the multiple color inking.

3. I then clear-embossed the church/house images and applied orange ( Ripe Persimmon) and yellow (Squeezed Lemonade) Distress inks over the houses.

4. With Scenery: Madison Creative Screenings, I applied white embossing paste (Wendi Vecchi) partially over the images and dusted fine glitter over the paste.

5. The sentiment “HOME” was created with two stacked dies from In a Word : Home Cutaway.

I hope to share more of my art journal in my next few posts. You can always apply the ideas and inspiration to any of your projects.

Lastly, I want to finish my first Leading Lady post with a card “Happy Everything”.

This card is nearly one layer. I started by stamping the flower image and leaves. I then used the backside (yes, flip them over and stamp!) of the flower stamps to add assorted colors. This can be achieved with a stamp positioner such as MISTI or Fiskars Stamping Press. The sentiment was stamped with The Big, The Bold and The Happy. I die cut a piece of foil paper with Goldie Trim Cutaways and layered it with a piece of color card stock.
