The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad + The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom

In all honestly I don't love this layout, but I am happy that I made it.  Scrapbooking has been haunting me.  I find it intimidating and yet alluring all the same.  I love seeing the beautiful layouts online and wish I had the courage to attempt making one and I did...twice this week!  Am I a master scrapbooker?  In no way, but my layouts do tell stories about people I care about, I challenged myself and I had fun.  That I believe is part of the point of scrapbooking.

I chose a story that is about my parents and yet unrelated to the actual event captured in the photograph.  I want to remember what my parents say and one of the things I love most about The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad and The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom is that it encourages journaling about what parents say and do. I felt it would be fun to add the speech bubbles I had stamped on patterned paper in grey ink directly on the picture.

I began the layout using the Elle's Studio patterned paper that I then sprayed with calico shine Mister Huey's by Studio Calico over a burst mask by Studio Calico.  I then shook drops of October Afternoon Sprinklers in springs and Mr. Huey's in bloomer.  Next I stamped the argyle from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad in grey ink.

I had stamped the argyle so it was behind the speech bubbles and wood veneer.  The speech bubbles were cut from a patterned paper and then stamped.

Hello there!  It is Shay here with some housekeeping matters and news.

It's a new month which means we start anew with join in to win!  April's join in to win! winners will be announced next week.  We've been enchanted with all your projects and comments this past month.  Thank you, thank you, thank you (deserves more than one "thank you")!

Our Third Release is this month and it is our largest yet!  Yay!  We've changed our release schedule.  Our Third Release Day is May 25 with Coming Attractions on May 20 and Premieres from May 21 - May 24.  Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day so Tuesday, May 27 is the first day when shipments of Third Release stamps will go out.   Our Playdate winner, Shirley-bee, along with Chaitali Narla will be joining us as our Guest Stars to bring you inspiration for our Third Release alongside The Talent.

I will be at Simon Says Stamp CREATE as a student/customer (if you are going I would love to meet you!) and thus will be out of town from Thursday, May 29 - Sunday, June 1.  As I am also known as the "shipping department", I will be unable to pack up and ship orders during that time, but be assured that I will hit the ground running and work on packing up all orders as quickly as possible as getting your stamps to you are one of our top priorities.

One of my MANY goals this year is to do more scrapbooking and memory keeping and one of my projects is to make my own brag book of my niece Kamilla.  That’s Ms. Milla around our house.  *hee hee*   This page was created to be the title page of my brag book which is in a Basic Grey Capture album.  While I was looking through the Elle’s Studio blog, I noticed that they have Sketch Thursdays, and I found this sketch from the April 17 blog post. My  page size is a bit smaller than the sketch here, with the dimensions for the background paper cut to 6  3/8 in.  x  9 1/2 in. 

This is my interpretation:

I know!  I know!  Isn't she the cutest?  Ok - I get to brag - I'm the Auntie!!!  

I used three papers from the 12x12 Everyday Moments collection – aqua solid (which isn't solid, but has a subtle visual texture – yum), the colorful polka dot, and the kraft which I used as a frame for the sleeping baby.  These papers made a great foundation for this page, and they are perfect for a baby.  I focused on using the yellow and pink/coral colored cardstock from my stash that coordinated with colors from the polka dot, and the yellow complimented the little flower on Kamilla’s hat.  Following the page sketch, I wanted to use a speech bubble and element up at the top, and I also needed an element to the right of the photo so I used .png files that are in our CUT THAT OUT digital die cut sets, and cut them with my Silhouette Cameo.  The speech bubble cut file is from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom and the ticket and heart cut files are from The Write Stuff: Love Story.  Kamilla’s name is also die cut from an image I created in Adobe Illustrator and cut using the Silhouette software Designer Edition.

All of the stamped items were created with Versamark ink and Stampin’ Up! Whisper White embossing powder.   The You’ve Got Love Mail stamp set is one of my favorites, and the LOVE, XOXO and tiny heart are all in this power house set.  It's not just for Valentine's - but for all of those special people in your life.  The XOXO pattern was created by stamping only 3 letters, and then offsetting the stamp each time until I filled up the ticket. It is so fun to customize die cuts like that and I really love how the “hello baby” turned out with the little heart– so tiny and sweet!

For finishing touches, I was able to dot the "i"  in Kamilla’s name with the tiny heart that was cut out of the ticket – don’t you like it when things just work out???  Last, but not least, I added some Candy Buttons from Basic Grey in a near matching yellow and a pink a few shades darker.  I've been hoarding these little guys, and thought this was the perfect time to use them.  I think my bragging album is off to a great start and the Elle's Studio products were so fun and easy to work with.

Welcome to our second Share the Love week and the beginning of our iNSD celebration.  New to Share the Love?  This is a week where we pick a company that we love and use their products with our very own winnie & walter ones and feature them right here on the w&w blog. 

For our second venture, we chose a company with impeccable design and delightful products that are perfect for scrapbooking and all sorts of papercrafting.  Elle's Studio has been around for 7 years and they just keep on coming out with good stuff month after month.

***DAD - if you are looking at the blog today, DON'T!!! - SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Hello everyone!  I am so looking forward to this week and all of the Share the Love magic that the Talent has in store for all of us!  Today, I am sharing a couple of cards I created.

I saw this really cute grey star pattern paper in the Everyday Moments 12x12 paper pack, and just knew that I wanted to use it for a card for my Dad.  I went totally star themed and slightly patriotic.  The Elle's Studio wood veneer and paper pieces also helped out here too.  I used my Chipped Sapphire distress ink to color the "special day" wood veneer and Encore ultimate metallic pigment ink in silver to highlight the star veneers.  I like the wood look, but on this project, I wanted to try something a little different, and I like how it turned out.

The little paper strip had a little more on it, but it didn't fit with my card, so I snipped it off to use later.  The red stripes on the paper did fit with my theme, and that is where I stamped the DAD and You're the BEST from Parentville, using warm red Chalk ink and more Chipped Sapphire.  So, some of you may recognize the blue star design here. It is a die cut from the Scenery: Big Bang Confetti CUT THAT OUT digital die cuts.  This particular image was resized from 3x4 journaling card to fit on the front of a greeting card.  Last but not least, a little sprinkling of red sequins.  Definitely a fun card to make, and one that any Dad would love.

Get ready for something SWEET!!!



For my second card, I thought I would make a birthday card.  I never seem to have them when I need them, and thought this would make a super cute one.  The CAKE card actually came in a separate little package to celebrate Elle's Studio being in business for 7 years!  Congratulations Elle!!!  And, how fun that the colors completely coordinate with this kit!



I used the CAKE card to lead the color palette.  First, I cut a thin strip of the aqua 12x12 paper and glued it to the back of the red and pink number paper (love this paper) and totally fun to use on a birthday card, no matter what your age.  Before I glued this onto my white card base, I stamped Scenery: Big Bang Confetti open circles on the right side of the card front in Memento Gray Flannel ink.  I thought it would be fun to color in some of the confetti like Nichol Magouirk (here & here), Jennifer McGuire (here), and my mom (here) did on their projects.  I used distress inks in Scattered Straw, Spun Sugar (stamped twice), Festive Berries, and Hero Arts shadow ink in Tide Pool mid-tone.  I did leave some circles open, but I covered them all in Star Dust Stickles.  In fact, I forgot to wait to let the card dry, so they still have the wet look here. LOL.  Last but not least, I cut a little of the yellow chevron/arrow paper and added the happy birthday message from The Big, the Bold and the Happy, also stamped in Gray Flannel ink. Both the CAKE and arrow are on pop dots.  Such a happy card!

Wow, I am so thrilled with Julie's cards and I know her dad is going to adore his father's day card!

I ventured into pretty unfamiliar territory for me: scrapbooking.  In fact if I have created a dozen layouts in my life I would be surprised.  I say this as a disclaimer (be kind!) and also encouragement to others: if I can do it then you can too!  What better time than to celebrate {inter}National Scrapbooking Day, right?

I thought doing a layout on my parents would be fun.  There are some fantastic pictures of them as they are a handsome couple.  These two pictures are actually from 1974 when they were still dating (left) and the 1980's most likely in their first decade of marriage (right).  Talking about their "love story" I pulled out The Write Stuff: Love Story and You've Got Love Mail stamp sets which are a dream to work with when chronicling love.

I concentrated on using the Everyday Moments Paper Collection Pack + Everyday Moments Bits and Pieces by Elle's Studio for this layout.  In particular I used the Love This and Numbers patterned paper including the little strips on the bottom.  From the Bits and Pieces I chose an index shaped card with a large ampersand, amazing arrow and kraft speech bubble.

I cut around the ampersand and nestled the smaller picture under it.  I stamped "love" from You've Got Love Mail twice in tide pool mid-tone Hero Arts Shadow Ink.

Partially under the photo I stamped the ledger heart from The Write Stuff: Love Story using distress inks in spun sugar, worn lipstick and fired brick that I spritzed with water before stamping.  I did this also under the kraft speech bubble.  I also used the same colors and technique with the script heart from You've Got Love Mail.  Over the ledger heart is the love circle stamped in grey.

I decided to write my journaling on the kraft speech bubble from the Bits and Pieces.  Over it I added a love story circle (my layout title) and popped it up for emphasis.  The little love circle in the middle connects the elements.  On the lower picture I added the true love tab...I just love how it adds a fun touch so easily.

Under this picture I stamped the love circle multiple times in grey (using second generation stamping) and then added the heart circle over it.  The photo corner was created with the strip from Numbers patterned paper.

Vibrant colors and patterns juxtaposed with clean cool whites make this one visually striking and hypnotic card!  Here Jocelyn has let the negative of "congrats" from The Big, the Bold and You cut files shine by placing it over a bold ombre pattern paper.  The "you rock" is stamped with The Big, the Bold and You stamp set (love the touches of sewing Jocelyn adds to her projects).  She further decorates her card with vellum spray of leaves cut with The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom cut files.  Few can so artistically layer and yet Jocelyn nails it!  Jocelyn, you rock!

Special Guest Star Melissa Phillips Take Two

Melissa Phillips enchants once again with two all new and positively riveting cards!  Wait until you see them!

Stamps used: Parentville + The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad

Melissa is well known for her projects of remarkable feminine grace, but this dad card proves that she also crafts amazing masculine cards too!  Melissa highlighted some of the stamps from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad by cutting out the center of the frame to reveal the male silhouette underneath which she stamped upon text patterned paper.  The addition of the red spades to the corners is a lovely touch. She chose to use sentiments from Parentville which we designed to match up with The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad (or The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom).  The star accents in red, white and blue and silver button all add a peppy feel.  If that isn't enough under the "dad" she faintly stamped the argyle from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Dad.  Such a dynamic and handsome card!

This last card is classic Melissa:  feminine; sweet; detailed and utterly charming.  She's stamped her own patterned paper with the bow and flower from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom in the background and it flows seamlessly with the layers of patterned paper and washi.  She stamped a heart and banner with smaller words from The Big, the Bold and You and embossed the big "you" from The Big, the Bold and You which she the framed with embossed sprigs from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom onto a tag.  So adorable!

Special Guest Star Jocelyn Olson Take One

You have only to see a project by Jocelyn Olson to know she has a uniquely wondrous outlook and marvelous eye.  Her ability to meld different mediums into something new, fresh, jubilant and exciting is something to treasure and learn from.  We aren't biased...honestly. :-)

This card is one example of how Jocelyn is such an amazing artist.  Her confident use of color, pattern and products not to mention the deft blending of stamps from The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom and The Write Stuff: Leave it to Mom cut files is indisputable proof.  There are layers of patterned paper, colors, images and embellishments, but there is also plenty of restful space to calm the eye.  It is a delicate balance Jocelyn does with consummate ease.  Seriously, what is there not to love?
